RSVP Volunteer Opportunites

ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM
LITERACY VOLUNTEERS are needed for a tutor training workshop beginning
in May. Volunteers provide one-to-one tutoring for adults in basic reading
and conversational English. An opportunity like this has a huge impact
on a person’s life.
FAMILY READING PARTNERSHIP of CHEMUNG VALLEY (FRPCV)
The FRPCV is in the process of forming a new committee called the Read
To Me Education Committee. This committee will look for ways to better
and more effectively educate parents about the importance of regularly
reading to their children. If you are interested in addressing this
issue and working on the committee, call our office today for details.
Help make reading to children a priority for parents.
CHEMUNG COUNTY OFFICE for the AGING – Ombudsman Program
An ombudsman volunteer is a person who is concerned with the quality
of care received by the elderly in nursing homes and who advocates for
the successful resolution of their concerns. A thirty-six hour training
will begin soon. Please consider this volunteer opportunity today.
KIDS' BICYCLE RODEO/ SENIORS' BIKE RACE
May is National Bike Month and volunteers are needed for both of these
fun-filled events, located at Tops Market in Elmira. Come help with
serving food and distributing bike helmets. Time trials and registration
help is needed for the senior bike races. For more information call

RIVER FEST 2008
Come join the fun at the 4th annual River Fest celebration on June 7th.
Volunteers are needed at several locations through out the day setting
up and taking down tents, information booth, traffic control and helping
with the children’s booth. This outdoor event is a wonderful way
to celebrate the many pleasures that the Chemung River provides.
FRIENDLY VISITING
Are you interested in having some social conversation, reading the newspaper
or having coffee with a senior citizen or homebound individual? The
Friendly Visiting program is in need of volunteers who will donate only
a few hours a month to someone in need. What a rewarding way to spend
some time.
CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION
Volunteers are needed for telephone registration for the Household Hazardous
Waste program. If you enjoy phone work and can donate a few hours of
your time, consider this opportunity.
COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATE (CASA)
Have you ever wanted to make a difference in a child’s life? CASA
volunteers are trained to advocate for abused and neglected children
in the family court system. Volunteers follow a child’s case then
makes recommendations to ensure that the child finds a safe and nurturing
home as quickly as possible. Training for CASA begins in May.
AMERICAN RED CROSS
If you are looking for a daily volunteer opportunity then come join
the folks at the American Red Cross. Volunteers are needed for phone
calling. Help register blood donors today and save a life!
